It can happen to anyone that they get distracted in the bathroom and suddenly something falls into the toilet bowl. Your first thought may be to flush the toilet and forget about it so you don’t have to plunge your hand into the cold, disgusting bottom of a bowl full of rubbish! All you have to do is not despair. Once the recovery is complete, almost any object can be easily disinfected and safely used again for its intended purpose.
Method 1
Recover and rinse the fallen object
-
Wear a pair of rubber gloves. In case you drop something in your toilet bowl, be prepared to use a pair of rubber gloves to have on hand. Before you plunge your hands into the germ-filled toilet bowls, you will need to wear some to make the task more bearable. If you are not at home or do not have gloves, you will have to consider whether it is worth doing it with bare hands [1] .
- Do not flush the toilet if the object is too large to fit through the toilet pipes, otherwise you will have to deal with a much worse situation [2] .
- If you don’t have gloves, you can use another tool, such as toilet paper or an inverted plastic bag, to protect your hand from the dirt your item fell into.
- If you can’t stand the thought of getting your hands dirty, you can salvage certain items, such as jewelry or keys, with a metal hanger folded into a hook.
-
Be quick. Whether you’re wearing gloves or not, try to minimize the time your hands spend in dirty toilet water. In one swift motion, reach into the toilet, grab your item, and quickly remove it, holding your hand over the toilet so that excess water flows into the bowl. Since toilets are a breeding ground for all sorts of viruses and bacteria, the less exposure you have, the better.continued on the next page
