Do you want me to tell you a secret?
My grandmother was way ahead of her time…
Because since then this thing has been taken up in a video on TikTok and is going viral 😉
Why do you need warm water to remove a worm from a cherry?
But remember, it is important not to use cold water.
If you submerge your fruit in cold water, the worms will stay warm inside the fruit.
Whereas if the water is not too cold, they will come out quickly.
Clever, isn’t it?
How to get worms out of fruit?
Unfortunately, cherries are not the only fruit to be attacked by white worms!
Strawberries in particular are also affected.
Fortunately, there is a trick to remove worms from fruit.
- Take a large salad bowl.
- Pour in 4 parts water and 1 part white vinegar.
- Add a generous pinch of salt.
- Put your fruit in water.
- Leave them in the water for 5 minutes.
- Rinse the fruit in clean water.
This way you naturally and quickly eliminate these worms that settle in the fruit.
But do you know why we find maggots when we open a cherry?
How did these critters end up in your fruit? Let’s take a look together.
Where do worms in cherries come from?
What you need to know is that these worms don’t appear by magic!
But they are laid by the cherry fruit fly.
There are 2 types of midges responsible:
Rhagoletis cerasi and Drosophila suzukii.
The cherry fruit fly lays its eggs on cherry trees in spring, between April and June.
Right on time for harvest!
The maggots lodge in the fruit where they are safe and find something to eat.
The problem, besides the fact that you can bite into it…
This is because they cause damage and spoil the fruit.
It is not for nothing that they say “the worm is in the fruit.”
This is because the fruit rots faster because of the worm.
