Knowing How to Use the Internet Safely
To keep your children safe, you need to be aware of the different types of dangers that exist online. For example, children and teens may find inappropriate content on the internet, such as pornography or obscene websites. Furthermore, there could be a possibility of cyberbullying or cyberstalking from other people online. This doesn’t mean your child will encounter all of these threats. However, knowing the dangers can help you and your children make smart decisions to keep them safe.
Important Phone Numbers
Teach your child the phone numbers to contact in an emergency: police, emergency services, firefighters, etc. Also teach your child how to dial these numbers from a landline or cell phone.
If you get lost, stay where you are
. If your child gets lost, tell them it’s important to stay where they are. If they see another mother with children nearby, they can ask for help, but don’t have to go with them.
Make learning fun!
You can make learning these tips fun. A good way to do this is to simulate dangerous situations, such as an adult offering candy or money to a child and asking them to follow them or get into their car. You’ll need to ask the child to react and then show them what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. Make it fun so the child can understand and then memorize them.
In conclusion, it’s important that you teach your children these basic safety rules as soon as they can understand them. There are similarly some things you can start teaching them as early as three years old. ALWAYS make sure you speak to your child in an age-appropriate language and always keep communication open. This will encourage your child to express themselves and not hold anything back from you.
