I decided not to press charges, but asked the officer to give Ms. Winslow a warning.

“Let him know that this is unacceptable and that I will file a complaint if it happens again.

When Hank and the kids came back, we talked about what had happened. They were all as shocked as I was and agreed that we had to take action and keep ourselves safe.

“We’re going to change the locks tomorrow,” Hank said. “I don’t care what people say.”

The next morning, I watched the locksmith at work while Hank and I drank coffee. We had barely slept the night before. We didn’t feel safe because Mrs. Winslow had the keys to the house.

But now that the locks had been changed, we were both reassured. We trusted her, but she had abused that trust in a way that was both profound and very destabilizing.

The incident with Ms. Winslow was a stark reminder to me that personal boundaries are sacred and must be respected.

Life is slowly getting back to normal, but I don’t think I can forget this story. And I think I’ll always feel uncomfortable when I see an upside-down cup.
