Throughout our lives, we are exposed to many elements. The most important of these is our own sun. While we need the sun for our health, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be very damaging to the skin. Often, this damage is not visible until decades later, in the form of what we colloquially call age spots. Age spots are simply hyperpigmentation of the skin, that is, the darkening of certain patches or spots, caused by sun exposure and damage.
The first and most important aspect of age spots is prevention. From a young age, you should use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 every day, even in the winter and on cloudy days. In addition to this, you should wear sun-protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses. However, once you already have age spots appearing, there are some natural skin care remedies you can use to help diminish them.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Studies show that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar (ACV) can lighten skin pigmentation. To use apple cider vinegar on your skin, you must first combine it in equal parts with water, otherwise it will be too harsh. Apply the mixture to the dark areas and leave it on for two to three minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and repeat twice a day.
