It is best to avoid the quick wash program for two often overlooked reasons.

Exception  : If your washing machine or dishwasher has a quick warm program, it is cheaper than the longer program. However, it only cleans lightly soiled clothes or dishes well.

If you choose an economical or environmentally friendly program, you will be much more economical and environmentally friendly. This is because longer operation requires less electricity and lower temperatures. The washing program can play its full role.

By skipping the hot quick wash program, you are already being much more environmentally friendly when doing laundry or dishes. Here are some additional tips:

  1. Opt for real green electricity  : with this decision, you are actively and effectively contributing to the energy transition.

  2. Correct amount of detergent  : Make sure you use the correct amount of detergent or dishwashing liquid. Often, excessive consumption can leave residue on clothes or dishes.

  3. Avoid pre-washing or soaking: Pre-washing or soaking is not  necessary for normally soiled clothes or dishes. If you have stubborn stains on your clothes, you can treat them first.

  4. No half-full machines  : To protect the environment, always fill the washing machine and dishwasher completely. However, you should also avoid overcrowding them. If the machine is only half full, an unnecessary amount of water and energy is wasted.

  5. Skip the dryer  : A tumble dryer uses a lot of energy. You can save this energy – and the associated costs – after washing by drying your laundry outside on a clothes horse or inside on a drying rack.
