How long can you keep your underwear before replacing it?

In an article published in the British media Daily Mail, Shirin Lakhani, British aesthetic doctor from Elite Aesthetics, declared that it is essential to change your underwear every twelve months. “Whatever the type of underwear, it remains a breeding ground for bacteria, from which machine washing is not always enough to completely rid it,” explains Dr Lakhani to the Daily Mail. Panties could be responsible for infections such as fungal infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Stephanie Taylor, intimate health expert and managing director of Kegel8, a company specializing in pelvic care, also revealed to the British newspaper that the choice of underwear for sleeping or exercising is essential in order to preserve intimate health.
But changing your underwear every year inevitably has a cost and the approach is far from being eco-responsible. To extend their lifespan in a healthy way, there are some unstoppable tips. When purchasing, choose “soft” materials perfect for everyday life. So, we will turn to “second skin” style panties in cotton, silk or microfibers. Please note that cotton remains the best option. In everyday life, we should therefore avoid rough materials such as lace which can cause friction and discomfort. To preserve your private parts, it is essential to choose the right size of panties. A model that is too tight could harm your comfort and your intimate health, because it could cause an imbalance in the pH of the vagina, but also irritation. Finally, if you can, avoid wearing underwear at night. “If you’re prone to vaginal infections, it’s probably a good idea to avoid wearing underwear at night, as it reduces the time the genitals are exposed to bacteria and minimizes moisture buildup,” explains Stephanie Taylor in the columns of the Daily Mail. The same goes for your sports sessions. If you can’t, then opt for suitable panties that you will only use for this purpose. Once you’re done with your workout, wash them right after.
