So Tom decided to buy her an apartment right next to theirs so Rose could have a safe place to escape to when she needed to get away from her old house.
This softened Rose’s heart toward him, so much so that she no longer bossed him around, but pampered him, calling him “My precious Tommy.”

What have we learned from this story?
Jealousy is a dangerous emotion. Evan was jealous of his wife’s burning love for her late husband, and this drove him to burn every memento she had of him. This made Rose sad, and ultimately, it didn’t stop her from loving her late husband. Evan could have helped his wife forget her late husband in better ways, but he couldn’t once he tapped into his jealousy.
Life goes on no matter what. Rose lost the love of her life and, with it, her reason to laugh. It was difficult for her to move on, and it affected her relationship with Evan, who wanted total devotion from his wife but struggled to compete with a dead man. Rose would have been better off letting Pete go and focusing on the present, which is Evan.
