Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Cleaning Lab, said that since dust mites are everywhere, it doesn’t make much difference to leave your bed unmade. But she adds that it’s a good idea to leave your bed unmade for a while in the morning to let the sheets dry after all your nighttime moving around.

While we sleep, we sweat and our skin peels, depositing these flakes on the sheets – providing a veritable feast for dust mites, the inhabitants of our bed.

“Something as simple as leaving the bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from sheets and mattresses so that dust mites dehydrate and die,” he added.

So, yes, experts recommend leaving your bed unmade all day – and only making your bed at night when you get home.

After a day of exposure to fresh air and light, much of the dust in your bed will be dead, allowing you to breathe a little easier, and it will be a scientific excuse for why you didn’t make your bed.
