H pylori or Helicobacter pylori is a little-known bacterium, yet it is present in the bodies of more than half of the world’s population! It is an intestinal bacterium that is undetectable unless a specific medical examination (blood test) is performed. It is responsible for stomach ulcers and other gastric diseases. The presence of H pylori disrupts gastric balance, and when this bacterium comes into contact with the mucosa (stomach wall), it causes ulcers, gastric reflux, and sometimes even stomach cancer.
What are the symptoms caused by the H pylori bacteria?
The presence of this bacteria causes embarrassing symptoms such as burping, bloating, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, etc. However, people do not associate these side effects with the presence of this bacteria in their body, believing it to be simply a digestive disorder or intolerance to certain foods.
The H pylori bacterium is the main cause of gastritis (an inflammation of the stomach lining). 90% of duodenal ulcers and about 80% of gastric ulcers are linked to H pylori. But the damage caused by this bacterium doesn’t stop at the stomach; it can cause cardiovascular problems, headaches, and Raynaud’s disease (caused by poor blood circulation in the hands and feet). It can also affect the nervous system, increasing depression and anxiety due to a lack of serotonin in the brain (the so-called happy hormone).
