Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Patties
- Heat the cooking oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat.
- In a medium bowl, gently combine the ground chuck, chopped onion, egg, hot sauce (if using), seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix until just combined—avoid overworking the meat.
- Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 equal-sized patties. Lightly coat each patty in flour, shaking off any excess.
- Cook the patties in the skillet until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties and set them aside on a plate.
Step 2: Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly, until the onions are soft and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth, water, ¼ cup flour, seasoned salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce (if using), and browning sauce (if using) until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into the skillet with the onions, stirring constantly. Cook until the gravy begins to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.
Step 3: Combine and Simmer
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, turning to coat them in the gravy. Add the sliced mushrooms (if using) and stir to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let everything simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to cook through.
Step 4: Serve
- Serve the hamburger steaks hot, topped with the creamy onion gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes, green beans, or a fresh garden salad for a complete meal.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, use beef stock instead of broth.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix an additional tablespoon of flour with a little water and stir it into the gravy.
- Let the patties rest for a few minutes after cooking to keep them juicy.
Enjoy this comforting, flavorful dish that’s perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions!
