– 1 pound of dried navy beans (soaked overnig

ht and drained)
– 1 large yellow onion, chopped
– 3 cloves of garlic, minced
– 3/4 cup of molasses
– 1/2 cup of brown sugar, packed
– 1/4 cup of maple syrup
– 1/4 cup of tomato ketchup
– 1 tablespoon of dry mustard
– 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika (for that lovely smoky flavor)
– 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
– 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (this is optional, for a kick, if your family likes a little spice!)
– 4 cups of water or as needed
– 8 ounces of thick-cut bacon, cooked and chopped (you could substitute this for smoked ham hocks if you prefer)
