Classic French Baguette
Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Shape each piece into a long, thin loaf, about 12 inches in length.
Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Place a shallow pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven to create steam.
Using a sharp knife, make 3-4 diagonal slashes on the top of each loaf.
Bake the baguettes in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crusty.
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Variations & Tips
For a more rustic flavor, you can substitute some of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. Adding a tablespoon of honey or sugar to the dough can give the baguette a slightly sweet taste. If you prefer a more pronounced crust, spray the loaves with water before baking. Experiment with different shapes, such as a round boule, for a different presentation. For added flavor, consider incorporating herbs like rosemary or thyme into the dough.
