Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat and Prep
- Preheat your oven broiler or toaster oven to high. Alternatively, you can use a skillet on the stovetop.
- If using optional veggies like celery or red onion, chop them finely and set aside.
2. Make the Tuna Salad
- In a mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, chopped celery, red onion (if using), and Dijon mustard (if using). Mix until well combined.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Adjust the mayo for creaminess if needed.
3. Assemble the Tuna Melts
- Place the slices of bread on a baking sheet or in a skillet.
- Divide the tuna mixture evenly among the slices of bread, spreading it out gently.
- Top each slice generously with shredded cheese. Add optional toppings like sliced tomatoes, spinach, or avocado if desired.
4. Broil or Toast
- Broiler Method: Place the assembled melts under the broiler for 3–5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the edges of the bread are golden brown. Watch closely to avoid burning.
- Stovetop Method: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the assembled melts in the skillet, cover with a lid, and cook for 3–5 minutes per side, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted.
5. Serve and Enjoy
- Remove from the oven or skillet and let cool slightly.
- Serve warm with pickles, chips, or a simple side salad for a complete meal.
